Where have my screenshots gone?

Q I wonder if you can help me. Since upgrading to software version 15, I can no longer take screenshots. Or rather, whenever I take one, it just seems to disappear – so I can’t open it. What’s going on?

A You didn’t say which device you’re using, but your ‘Outlook for iOS’ email signature suggests it’s an iPad or iPhone. That tallies with the ‘software version 15’ description in your question, because Apple started rolling out iOS 15 at the end of 2021.

Any screenshots you capture in iOS 15 are saved to the Screenshots album in the Photos app. This isn’t a new feature – it first appeared in iOS 9, back in 2015. However, if you haven’t updated your iPad in a long while, or even just for a couple of iOS versions, the layout of the Photos app might be confusing.

How you get to the screenshots album varies depending on the device you’re using and where you are in the Photos app. On an iPad running iOS 15, the trick is to tap whatever icon or label appears in the top left of the Photos app, until a side menu opens. From there, under Media Types, you can tap to view the Screenshots album (see screenshot above). You may need to tap the Media Types heading first to expand it.

If you’re using an iPhone, open the Photos app and tap the Albums icon at the bottom of the screen. Swipe up to find the Media Types heading (see screenshot left), then tap Screenshots.
